Who I am Rooting For

I am a long time die-hard Broncos fan.  Ideally, I would just be rooting for the Broncos today against the Chiefs and not really worry about the other teams. There are ten different scenarios for the Broncos to make the playoffs.  A loss to the Chiefs at home wouldn’t knock the Broncos out, but would make things a lot more difficult.  The Broncos can clinch a playoff spot with:

  • a win (vs. Kansas City) and a N.Y. Jets loss loss or tie (vs. Cincinnati) and a Baltimore loss or tie (vs. Oakland) OR
  • a win and a N.Y. Jets loss or tie and a Pittsburgh loss or tie (vs. Miami) OR
  • a win and a N.Y. Jets loss or tie and a Houston win (vs. New England) OR
  • a win and a Baltimore loss or tie and a Pittsburgh loss or tie OR
  • a win and a Baltimore loss or tie and a Houston win OR
  • a Pittsburgh loss and a Baltimore loss and a Houston loss and a Jacksonville loss (vs. Cleveland) OR
  • a Pittsburgh loss and a Baltimore loss and a Houston loss and a N.Y. Jets loss OR
  • Pittsburgh loss and a Baltimore loss and a Jacksonville loss and a N.Y. Jets loss OR
  • Pittsburgh loss and a Houston loss and a Jacksonville loss and a N.Y. Jets loss OR
  • Miami loss or tie (vs. Pittsburgh) and a N.Y. Jets loss and a Baltimore loss and a Houston loss and a Jacksonville loss or tie

The weird part is that some of the teams to root for are different with a Broncos win than with a Broncos loss.  With a Broncos win, I am rooting for Miami and Houston while with a Broncos loss, I am rooting for Pittsburgh and New England. I will lay the scenario for a Broncos playoff assuming a Broncos win (since many of the games are played the Broncos game.  Below are the teams I am rooting for today:

  • Denver Broncos
  • Cincinnati Bengals (at New York Jets)
  • Oakland Raiders <ugh> (vs. Baltimore Ravens)
  • Houston Texans (vs. New England)*
  • Miami Dolphins (vs. Pittsburgh)*
  • Cleveland Browns (vs. Jacksonville

The bottom line is no matter what, either the Jets or Ravens have to lose. If the Jets or Ravens lose, the Texans and Dolphins have to win.  If the Jets and Ravens both lose, all the Broncos have to do is win.

*Should the Broncos lose, I am rooting for for the Steelers and Patriots instead of the Dolphins and Texans.

  1. At least your team still has a shot. It would take divine intervention and an act of Congress to get the Washington Redskins in the playoffs.

  2. 3:00PM Eastern – With Houston and Miami losing (bad) and Jacksonville losing (good), it no longer matters what the Broncos do. The Jets and the Ravens must lose. If this happens, the Broncos are in whether they win or lose. If either the Jets or Ravens win, the Broncos are eliminated regardless of if they win or lose.

  3. Houston and Pittsburgh winning is good news and bad news. The good news is that the Broncos can get in with either the Jets or Ravens winning (but not both) providing the Broncos win. The bad news is with the Texans winning, the Broncos are now eliminated with a loss.

  4. Turn off the lights… the party’s over…
